Editorial policy
How we write the articles on the Periscope blog, and what they are and aren't.
Who writes the articles
Articles on this site are written and edited by the team that makes Periscope, a weight tracker for iPhone. We're app makers, not doctors or dietitians, and we don't claim otherwise. Nobody on the team gets paid by the brands we mention.
How we research
We start from primary sources: peer-reviewed studies, and guidance from public health bodies such as the NIH, CDC, NHS and WHO. We read the source itself, not someone else's summary of it, and link it next to the claim it supports. Each article lists its sources at the end.
Where the research is thin or mixed, we say so. We give ranges instead of precise promises, and we label example numbers and charts as illustrative.
How we compare apps
Comparison articles say up front that they are written by Periscope's makers. Prices and features for other apps come from their App Store listings and official websites, with the date we checked. We point out where other apps do things better than Periscope, and we update the article when we learn something has changed.
Not medical advice
Everything here is general information to help you understand your own numbers. It isn't a diagnosis or a treatment plan. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant, take medication that affects your weight, or are worried about a change in your weight, please talk to a doctor.
Weighing yourself and taking progress photos aren't right for everyone. If tracking your weight makes you anxious or you have a history of disordered eating, it's fine to skip it. Support is available from NEDA in the US and Beat in the UK.
Translations
Articles are written in English and translated into the site's other languages. Sources stay in their original language, and prices and ratings for other apps are from the US App Store unless we say otherwise.
Corrections and updates
If something is wrong or out of date, we fix it and change the article's "Updated" date. Spotted a mistake? Tell us and we'll look at it.
